Rajesh, a resident of Hari Nagar, has a mobile juice outlet at Prabhu Market near the Sewa Nagar railway crossing. He alleged that the incident took place around 10 a.m. on June 10 when Head Constable Jai Prakash came to his outlet to have juice. When Rajesh asked Jai Prakash to make the payment, the policeman allegedly threatened him with dire consequences and then dragged him to the area police station.
In his complaint, Rajesh alleged that head constables Shiv Kumar and Anil Bhati then beat him up badly and kept him at the police station for an hour.
The accused head constables warned that Rajesh would have to offer free juice to more policemen in future if he ever demanded money from them and that they would frame him in some case.
A hapless Rajesh contacted the National Association of Street Vendors of India that took up the matter and lodged a complaint on his behalf with the area Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police. “Inhuman treatment was meted out to the vendor when he asked for the money even after serving free juice to the policemen for over two months,” alleged the complaint, seeking justice for the vendor.
Based on the complaint, the policemen were shifted out of their allocated beats pending vigilance inquiry to verify the allegations. “After the complaint was lodged, they have stopped coming,” said a relieved Rajesh.
