Vendors, shopkeepers to be penalised for littering

September 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Shopkeepers, vendors and mobile vans serving food that don’t provide bins or manage their trash will be penalised by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Commissioner Pravin Kumar Gupta said during field inspections officials had found that hawkers, especially food outlets, were not making arrangements for collecting garbage produced by their customers.

“This not only creates insanitary conditions in the area, but also chokes the flow of storm water drains as the trash collects there too,” said Mr. Gupta.

The National Green Tribunal had also issued directions to civic bodies to act against litterbugs, he said.

Street vendors will be asked to make their own arrangements for waste collection and disposal at the municipal bins or dumps. If they fail to do so, they will be prosecuted.
