A vehicle thief who was inspired by notorious criminal Bunty Chor has been arrested for stealing luxury cars from posh localities in Delhi.

The brand of cars Robin laid his hands on included Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and the high-end models of Toyota and Volkswagen.

With his arrest, the police claim to have solved at least 30 cases of theft of luxury cars. They have also recovered an Audi car, a Toyota Fortuner and a BMW that were stolen from Noida this month.

Recent case

The BMW theft from Noida was captured by CCTV cameras and was broadcast by news channels. The audacity with which the car was stolen had gone on to create panic among the locals.

A resident of South Delhi’s Friends Colony, Robin was greatly inspired by Bunty Chor, a notorious thief whose modus operandi even inspired a popular Bollywood film, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye.

“Robin had watched ‘Oye Lucky Lucky Oye’ several times to study the modus operandi in detail. He would always keep Bunty Chor’s photograph in his pocket,” said Pushpendra Kumar, DCP (West Delhi).

His parents were so tired of his criminal activities that they had “disowned” him. He had been living with his girlfriend in South Delhi’s Deoli since recently.

When Robin and his associates would plan a theft, they would dress in branded clothes. That would allow them easy access to posh homes whose guards were often fooled into believing they were relatives of the house owners.

For executing their crimes, the thieves would choose early morning hours when people would go out for walks.

Winning style

“After zeroing in on a house, Robin would confidently walk inside and either steal the keys of the car parked on the premises or ask the servants or guards for the same. Often, the guards would be overawed by his personality and quietly hand over the keys without a question,” said the DCP. The police said he would also wear a wig to conceal his identity.

He would then drive away in the car without any interruption. The police have learnt that he would sell the stolen cars to a person in Uttarakhand.

Robin was arrested by an anti-auto-theft squad of West Delhi district police who were on the trail of vehicle thieves in view of the recent spurs in such crimes.

The team received a tip-off on Wednesday about a vehicle thief visiting a spot behind Radisson Blu Hotel in Paschim Vihar to sell off a BMW car stolen from Noida a week ago.

A trap was laid, and around 7 p.m. the police spotted the BMW. As soon as the occupants of the car emerged, the police nabbed them.

One of them managed to escape, while the other was caught following a brief chase.

The nabbed suspect turned out to be Robin. He initially tried to mislead the team, but soon confessed to his involvement in the thefts.
