It would be a herculean task for the Delhi Development Authority to complete the 2,000-odd flats in Vasant Kunj here, meant for tourists and delegates of the Commonwealth Games, before the September 10 deadline.

Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna, who is also Chairman of the Authority, has already visited the site thrice in the past fortnight to monitor progress. To expedite the project, he has asked DDA Finance Member Nand Lal to take over charge.

Mr. Lal, who is an expert on financial matters, has to take administrative decisions like working out the logistics,, prioritising work and taking decision on which tower is to be completed first.

To complete the work on time, 14 agencies have been given contracts. Four superintendent engineers and 16 executive engineers are getting the work done from the 1,759 skilled work force.

Two hundred and sixty four rooms which are ready have been handed over to the India Tourism Development Corporation for furnishing. The cost will be borne by the Authority. “After furnishing, these rooms would be handed over to the technical staff of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. But 1,069 rooms are yet to be completed by DDA for the technical staff. We have already missed the March 31 deadline and it will be an impossible task for us to complete all the rooms,” said an official.

Skilled labour force has been working day in and day out to finish the work. The Lieutenant-Governor has also asked the contractors to get additional labour force to work in the evening. “They would be paid extra wages,” the official added.
