The United States Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, and US Permanent Representative to United Nations, Samantha Power, along with the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) team visited the Capital’s red light area, GB Road.

“The US Ambassador and Ms Power wanted to visit GB Road and had requested DCW chairperson to accompany them on the visit and explain to them the ground realities of the red light area. After a 30-minutes long meeting, they went to meet the sex workers in brothels,” said an official at the DCW. DCW had asked the US Ambassador and the American Chamber of Commerce to provide financial assistance for rehabilitation of the sex workers. Praising the initiatives taken up by the DCW for the sex workers, Mr. Verma told the commission that he will try to fund the project.

Soon after the meeting Richard Verma tweeted about the visit and US Embassy also re-tweeted. “Kudos to @SwatiJaiHind for her outstanding campaign to improve government rehabilitation shelters @AmbassadorPower. [sic]”
