Amid reports of a rift within the Bharatiya Janata Party over choosing Kiran Bedi as the chief ministerial candidate, Union Minister Uma Bharti on Saturday came out in support of the former IPS officer’s candidature.
Ms. Bharti said: “I was very happy when I got to know that Kiran Bedi has been chosen as the chief ministerial candidate for Delhi. I am a big fan of hers and I am sure she will discharge her duties as a CM very well. Not only the women, but men in Delhi will also be happy if she becomes the CM because she is a very good administrator.”
The Water Resources Minister in the Narendra Modi Government, Ms. Bharti was addressing a gathering of a few hundred people in Old Rajender Nagar in West Delhi on Saturday.
She added that she is really happy that Ms. Bedi joined the BJP. “I am happy that Kiran Bedi left the company of Arvind Kejriwal. He and his team used a great personality like Anna Hazare for their political gains,” she added.
Ms. Bharti emphasised the achievements of the Modi government and insisted that electing BJP will be a “one stop solution” for all the problems of Delhi residents.
Her comment “The pride of calling yourself an Indian is back with Modiji becoming the Prime Minister” received a loud cheer from the public.
Old Rajender Nagar area is part of the Rajender Nagar Assembly seat in West Delhi. The BJP candidate from the Assembly seat R.P. Singh is try for a second term.
Mr. Singh said: “Issues of garbage disposal, roads, sewer, all have been sorted out in the last eleven months. Let me remind you of one such time when we fixed the problem. Do you all remember the Gangaram chowk? There used to be a garbage dump there and people used to throw all the waste in it. We got it removed and there is a green belt there now,” said Mr. Singh.
“Lack of parking space is one of the major issues in Rajender Nagar which we are planning to fix. If I am elected as an MLA from this area I will get big parking lots made in all the colonies. These lots will be made after counting the total number of cars in the area,” he added. The venue of the public meeting was strategically panned in the middle of a market where a large number of trader community, students and residents were present.
