Delhi Police sleuths investigating the Uber cab rape case described the accused, Shiv Kumar Yadav, as a “psychotic criminal” and a “master of lies” who by his own admission had targeted more passengers in the past.
A senior police officer on Thursday said the 32-year-old had disclosed during interrogation that he had targeted several women who hired his cab to travel from Sahara Mall in Gurgaon to South Delhi.
“Yadav told us that all these cases remained unreported and that he himself never believed that his actions were criminal in nature. He even tried to justify some of his sexual assaults on passengers as consensual acts in lieu of fare,” said the officer. “Since he has changed his statement so many times, we are still verifying his claims. We will book more cases against him if complainants come forward,” the officer said.
One of his passengers, travelling on the Gurgaon-South Delhi route, had accused him of rape in 2011, but he was acquitted due to lack of proof.
Meanwhile, the Tis Hazari court sent Yadav to 14-day judicial custody.
Uber apologises
Meanwhile, Uber issued an apology and promised to institute background checks for its drivers and said it wanted to contribute towards making the Capital safer for women.
“We are sorry by what happened. The events have made us reflect on our operations in India and we are undertaking a number of actions,” said a statement issued by Uber’s representative Karun Arya.
