Former MP and senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler on Tuesday filed his nomination for the party primary in North East Delhi for choosing a candidate for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Apart from Mr. Tytler, sitting MP J.P. Agrawal and ex-MLA from Patel Nagar Rajesh Lilothia also filed their nominations. An electorate of around 350 party workers will now vote in a secret ballot to choose the party candidate on March 11, following a debate between the three candidates before the eligible voters.

Mr. Tytler’s candidature was withdrawn by the party during the last Lok Sabha polls due to protests over his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, he said as he has been given a clean chit by the court, he has decided to enter the primaries to “strengthen the vision of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi”. “Five years back I withdrew as per the party advice as two complaints were filed against me. Now, I have been given a clean chit It’s now up to party workers to decide who is the best candidate,” he said.

All the three candidates in the fray exuded confidence of winning the primary. While Mr. Lilothia claimed he would win “because the party vice-president has been promoting youth in the party”, Mr. Agrawal said: “The party members will support me because I have never hurt anybody.”

North East Delhi parliamentary constituency is one of the two Lok Sabha seats (other being New Delhi) where the party is holding US-style primaries to decide its candidate.
