Two Manipuri youths were brutally assaulted by a group of men in Munirka here on Monday afternoon following a minor argument about spitting on the road.

The complainant, 25-year-old Ronny, who is employed with a call centre, said the incident happened around 3 p.m. when he was standing near the building where he has taken a room on rent.

“I and my friend Seijong Guite, who also lives in the same building, were standing next to our house when a mosquito went into my mouth. When I tried to spit it, Adarsh, who is the owner of the building next to mine, saw me doing so and asked me why I was spitting on the road. I tried to explain to him what exactly had happened but he would not listen to me and kept shouting,” said Ronny.

Ronny said since he is not well versed with Hindi, he found it difficult to explain himself. “A little later, Adarsh and one of his accomplices returned with wooden sticks and started beating me up. They were soon joined by a few others and all of them assaulted me till I started bleeding,” he said.

Ronny said his friend Seijong came to his help but he too was assaulted by the group. After some time, Ronny said the alleged attackers left the place. The boy then made a call to an organisation of North-Eastern students whose representative in turn informed the Police Control Room about the attack.

The police then took the victims to Safdarjung Hospital where Ronny was treated for injuries he received on several parts of his body, including the head. Seijong received internal injuries and had muscle rupture in his ears. A case has been registered and two of the accused have been arrested, said the police.
