Two remanded in CBI custody in documents theft case

March 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - New Delhi:

A Delhi court on Friday remanded two Central government officials in five-day CBI custody in the documents theft case to allow the “investigating agency to unearth a larger conspiracy” to steal classified documents and sell them for illegal gratification.

Additional Sessions Judge S.C. Rajan remanded Ashok Kumar Singh, Under Secretary in the Department of Disinvestment of the Finance Ministry, and Lala Ram Sharma, Section Officer in the Department of Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry, till March 17.

Earlier the CBI produced the two accused before the court and sought their five days’ police remand submitting that the retrieval of data from the two e-mail accounts of the Under Secretary had revealed that he had passed on voluminous classified documents to chartered account Khem Chand Gandhi in Mumbai in lieu of money.

It further submitted that there was also third accused, Daljit Singh, Upper Division Clerk in the Department of Industrial Policy of the Commerce Ministry, in the case but he was not arrested as he was out of station.

Counsel for the CBI submitted before the court that the police remand of the Under Secretary and the Section Officer was required to confront them with Khem Chand Gandhi, who would be brought here on a transit remand, and Daljit Singh, after his arrest.

So far, 19 people have been arrested in the two cases.
