Two persons carrying fake notes of ₹2,000 denomination with a face value of ₹1 lakh were arrested near Gandhi Maidan in old Delhi.
The accused were identified as Jamirul, a native of Malda district in West Bengal and Satyawan, a native of Hisar in Haryana. According to the police, around 1 am on Thursday, two constables on patrolling duty noticed two persons roaming suspiciously near the exit gate parking at Gandhi Maidan.
When the policemen tried to stop them, they started running and were held after a brief chase.
“Sub-inspector Pankaj Tomar and constable Premchand detained both suspects and brought them to Kotwali police station for further questioning. During the search, the police recovered 30 fake notes of ₹2,000 denomination from the possession of Jamirul and 20 similar fake notes from Satyawan,” said Jatin Narwal, DCP (North).
Exchanging notes
They told the police that they were there to exchange some of the fake notes with their associates who was coming from Haryana to meet them in Old Delhi. The notes seized on Thursday are of good quality and not coloured photocopies, said the police. As the fake notes were transported from Malda, there is a possibility that it could be have been routed through Bangladesh or Pakistan, they added.
“The fake currency notes were seized and a FIR under relevant sections of IPC has been registered at Kotwali police station. The accused were produced in Tis Hazari courts where the duo were sent to eight days’ police custody. A police team will be sent to Malda for further investigation,” added Mr. Narwal.
