In yet another alleged racist attack on Northeastern migrants, two young men from Manipur were assaulted by a group of men at a market in South Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar late on Sunday night.
Late in the evening, the police apprehended two minors for the incident.
The incident comes days after Nido Tania, a 19-year-old boy from Arunachal Pradesh, died following a “racial attack” by employees of a shop in Lajpat Nagar.
The victims have been identified as Ginkhansuan Naulak and his cousin Vumsuanmung Naulak, both in their mid-Twenties.
According to the police, the two had gone to the Ambedkar Nagar market to make some purchases when the incident took place.
“The two alleged that around 8-30 p.m. they were consuming liquor near a shop when the other group reached there. Soon an argument broke out between them over some issue,” said a police officer.
He further said that one of the persons slapped Ginkhansuan below his ear causing him to bleed. As the cousins tried to back off and proceed towards home, they were stopped. Both were then attacked with sticks.
Cornered, the two raised an alarm and the attackers beat a hasty retreat.
Another relative of the Naulaks, who was nearby, came to their rescue and took them to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Vumsuanmung was discharged after first aid.
Ginkhansuan, whose injuries included laceration in his left ear, had to be given stitches and was discharged on Monday.
The complainants are learnt to have told the police that the attackers were five in number. However, a senior police officer said so far they had identified two persons but refused to share details.
