Two persons were killed in Monday morning’s pile-up on Meerut-Ghaziabad Road, the police said.

Nine-car pile-up

The incident happened when a speeding truck rammed a bike while trying to avoid a head-on collision with a vehicle involved in the nine-car pile-up on Monday.

Two persons sustained injuries in the pile-up, the police said. They added that Ram and Amit were taken to a hospital, where the doctor declared them out of danger.

The deceased have been identified as 41-year-old Devendra and Naresh (40). The duo worked with private companies and were neighbours at Ghookna village of Ghaziabad. They were on the way to the market to shop for Devendra’s house warming ceremony when the incident happened.

The police said the incident happened on a busy road near Ghookna Morh under Sihani Gate police station around 8 a.m. A speeding bus rammed a car, leading to the pile-up. One vehicle tried to drive away from the spot and came in front of the truck, which was coming from the opposite side.

“The truck driver swerved left to avoid a head-on collision but hit the bike on which Devendra and Naresh were riding. They died on the spot,” said Vinod Kumar Pandey, Station House Officer, Sihani Gate police station.

Case registered

The police said the drivers of both the truck and the bus fled by the time the police reached the spot.

“We have registered a case under Section 304(A) of the Indian Penal code for causing death due to negligence. Both drivers are absconding but will be held soon,” said Mr. Pandey.
