Coming under criticism from transport experts for dismantling Delhi’s only BRT corridor, the AAP government has proposed to construct two new corridors in the next fiscal.

With an aim to create an accessible public transport system as reliable and convenient as the Delhi Metro, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the government proposed two elevated BRT corridors — one from Anand Vihar Terminal to Peeragarhi (29-km-long East-West Corridor) and the other from Wazirabad to the IGI Airport (24-km-long North-South Corridor).

The Finance Minister has also proposed to overhaul 11 arterial stretches in accordance with international standards and improve road infrastructure.

Redesigning will include installation of glass lifts, toilet blocks, plantations, solar-powered street lights and rainwater harvesting systems, in addition to making them pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, he added.

The Delhi government has planned an outlay of Rs. 2,208 crore, which is 11 per cent of the total plan outlay for the fiscal, exclusively for the enhancement of road infrastructure in the Capital.

“The elevated road over Barapullah Nallah phase-II from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to INA (Aurobindo Marg) will become functional in 2016-17. The work on elevated road over Barapullah Nallah phase-III from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar at a cost of Rs. 1,261 crore is in progress and will be completed by December 2017. I propose Rs. 400 crore for both the projects for 2016-17,” Mr. Sisodia announced.

Four additional stretches of elevated corridors, one underground tunnel from NH-24 bypass to Lodhi Road and the corridor improvement of the road from Khajuri Khas to the Bhopura border, Mr. Sisodia said, will also be taken up in 2016-17.

“Dedicated non-motorised vehicle lanes or cycle tracks and footpaths on both sides of the Outer Ring Road from Vikas Puri to Wazirabad are also proposed,” he said.
