A jilted doctor and three others were arrested on Thursday for the acid attack on a 30-year-old female doctor in Rajouri Garden two days ago. The main accused Dr. Ashok Yadav (32), a close friend of the victim had allegedly plotted the crime as he was upset with her proposed marriage, Delhi Police officials said on Thursday.

The accused was the first person the victim had contacted after the attack. Dr. Yadav had also accompanied the victim from the crime scene to the hospital. Dr. Yadav’s conduit Vaibhav (20) has also been arrested while two juveniles who carried out the attack for money have been apprehended, said Joint Commissioner of Police (South Western Range) Tajender Singh Luthra.

A senior resident at ESIC Hospital, Dr. Yadav arranged the acid used in committing the crime and handed it over to the juveniles.

Another police officer said that they zeroed in on Dr. Yadav with the help of technical surveillance.

“Even though the boys had snatched the woman’s purse, we had ruled out robbery as a motive from the very beginning. The motorcycle borne assailants had followed her two-wheeler since she left home. CCTV footage also established that they carried out the attack in an open market, further fuelling this suspicion,” he said.

It is alleged that Dr. Yadav, who wanted to teach the woman a lesson for marrying someone else, roped in his friend to hatch a conspiracy.

“Vaibhav informed Yadav that he knew some persons who could execute the attack. Vaibhav hired two juveniles and even participated in trial runs by making them throw water on himself from the syringe that was later used in the attack,” Mr. Luthra said.
