Tumour removed from heart

Hospital says its medical team operated and took out the tumour just in time to save life of 60-year-old

Doctors at a private hospital here performed a rare surgery on a 60-year old man who was gasping when brought to the emergency ward. According to the doctors of VPS Rockland Hospital, Qutab Institutional area, the patient suffered a heart arrest due to a tumour in the the left pumping chamber.

Tennis ball-sized tumour

“Investigations found a tumour the size of a tennis ball inside his heart. The tumour was filling up a chamber of the heart and choking it. We told the family that an open heart surgery was the only way,” said Dr. Sanjog Rawtani of the hospital. The medical team was successful in taking out the tumour, which was bulky, friable and lying dangerously in the left pumping chamber of the heart, said a release issued by the hospital. “The patient did not have any history of pain or breathlessness. The emergency case was diagnosed by doctors here. The tumour, if not removed, could have caused a cardiac arrest or a portion of it could have dislodged caused a stroke or organ damage,” added Dr. Rawtani.
