Train gang targeted general compartments

September 29, 2009 07:18 pm | Updated 07:18 pm IST - New Delhi:

The gang of dacoits which targeted a train here two days ago, had allegedly been involved in a similar incident last week and made it a practice to rob passengers travelling in general compartments, police said today.

The gang, which looted passengers on board the Kalka-Delhi 'Himalayan Queen Express' on Sunday night in Narela, was also allegedly involved in an incident of dacoity in the 'Unchahar Express' on September 25, a senior police official said.

Three out of the eight members of the gang were arrested within hours after they looted passengers of the 'Himalayan Queen Express', Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) B S Gurjar told reporters here.

“Five are absconding and we are on their trail,” he said. The gang had boarded the train at Sonepat station on Sunday night and as it approached Narela, they flashed a pistol and knives and looted passengers of their cash, mobile phones and jewellery.

At least 11 passengers were looted by the dacoits. “As one of the passengers pulled the alarm chain, the robbers jumped out of the train and escaped,” Gurjar said.

“The gang members belonged to Sonepat and they used to board select trains from Sonepat railway station. They chose mostly general compartments which did not have any police presence and committed robbery,” he said.
