A Special Court on Friday asked the Tihar jail authorities to file a reply to an accusation by meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi that he was getting threats from alleged gangster Neeraj Bawana.
Mr. Qureshi and Mr. Bawana are lodged in the high-risk ward of the prison. Earlier, Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj had asked the jail authorities to file a reply to the allegation by Friday.
However, when the mater came up for hearing, the jail authorities sought more time. The judge then asked it to respond to the allegation by November 20.
Money laundering case
“I have been shifted from the general ward to the high- risk ward where dreaded criminal, including those accused of rape and terrorism, are lodged. I received the threat from Mr. Bawana through his associate, who is also in the same jail,” Mr. Qureshi said in his application filed in the court.
Mr. Qureshi further alleged his family members had also received threats.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had last month filed a complaint against Mr. Qureshi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act alleging that he had extorted ₹7.5 crore from two businessmen, Pradeep Koneru and Satish Sana, using the names of former CBI directors and promising to help them in CBI cases against them.
Hawala transactions
Mr. Qureshi was also involved in hawala transactions through Delhi-based hawala operators, the ED alleged.
Mr. Bawana, on the other hand, has been chargesheeted in various cases, including offences punishable under the provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) .
