Three women in their early 20s died in a car crash on the Yamuna Expressway in the early hours of the New Year when the car they were travelling in hit a divider and turned turtle.
According to the local police, six people were travelling in the Verna car when the accident occurred between Noida International University and Galgotia’s University in Greater Noida on Thursday at 2 a.m.
The three young women, Shivani, Arushi and Akanksha, died instantly, said Dankaur Station Officer (SO) Praveen Kumar Yadav. “Two of the girls were MBA students in Greater Noida. The other three passengers in the car were injured and are stable.”
The injured persons included a Delhi University student, Lavanya, one Sumit Das and the driver of the car, Shekhar. “It is a case of overspeeding. Though they were out to celebrate the New Year with a long drive, it does not appear to be a case of drunken driving,” said Mr. Yadav.
The accident was the second fatal crash on the 165-km expressway from Greater Noida to Agra in a span of one week. On December 24, fog had led to a massive 27-vehicle pile-up that killed two persons on the expressway
The next day, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority had asked the Central Road Research Institute to conduct a study to find out why the road was so accident-prone.
