Three persons, including two women, and a juvenile were arrested on December 2 in connection with burglary at a house in north-west Delhi’s Model Town, the police said on Monday. They added that cash and jewellery worth over ₹85 lakh was recovered from the accused.
According to the police, the complainant, a businessman, initially reported just ₹3 lakh and jewellery worth of ₹8 lakh missing in his complaint. However, he confessed that the money and jewellery belong to him after the loot was recovered, said a senior police officer.
Lck of forced entry
The accused have been identified as Deepa (30), Kunti (24) and Rohit (24). On December 2, the accused decamped with valuables from the first floor of the four-storey house while the family was out for a wedding. Due to lack of any signs of forced entry, the police suspected the involvement of the maids.
CCTV footage from cameras installed in the house and the neighbourhood showed a suspicious man lurking in the area. However, he could not be identified. Two of the maids were also seen going out of the house and returning late at night.
Kunti later confessed that Deepa had roped her in for the burglary, as were Kunti’s brother-in-law Rohit and the minor house help. The accused managed to steal the duplicate keys of the almirahs nearly around a month back and waited till the owners left the house to commit the robbery, said an officer.
When the entire family left for the wedding, Kunti, Deepa and the juvenile took all the jewellery and cash from the house and handed it over to Rohit. The maids were apprehended while Rohit was nabbed from Mukundpur, and the loot was recovered from him, the police said.
