Theatre veteran Gopal Sharman’s iconic play The Ramayana , which has mesmerised audiences across the world for the past 43 years, is currently being staged at Akshara Theatre in Delhi.

Actor Jalabala Vaidya, Gopal’s wife, said she performed the play as a one-woman show all over the world, including on Broadway, at the United Nations headquarters in New York and at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London.

“For the past three years, I have been joined on stage by a group of talented young actors who have been arduously trained by us. I still open and close the play, while the young actors take on the roles of Rama, Sita, Ravana, Mandodari, Hanuman, Bharata and Lakshmana.”

The couple’s grandchildren are part of this talented group of young actors.

“My granddaughter Nisa (22 years) plays Sita, while my 18-year-old grandson Dhruv plays Hanuman. I cannot tell you how pleased I am that the third generation of our family is part of this production.”

The play will be staged from Friday till October 17.
