An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with Delhi Police crime branch was caught red-handed extorting from a liquor smuggler in north Delhi.

Two other policemen, also involved in the extortion exercise, managed to escape from the spot and are being hunted by the police. The accused constable and head constable are posted with the crime branch and excise department respectively.

Departmental action, including dismissal from service, has been initiated against the three policemen, the police said on Thursday.

“In the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, ASI Tejvir, constable Jagbir and head constable Narender had intercepted a vehicle smuggling illicit liquor near Jahangirpuri metro station. The policemen demanded Rs.3 lakh to let off the driver, who would smuggle liquor from Haryana to Delhi,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

The driver managed to procure Rs.1.63 lakh, of which the ASI gave Rs.25,000 each to his associates. Even as they were pressurising the driver to get the remaining money, a local officer patrolling the area confronted them.

Tejvir was nabbed from the spot, whereas his associates and the liquor smuggler managed to escape with the vehicle. The police said Tejvir was officially on leave during the period he had allegedly indulged in the crime. He was, however, found in the possession of a country-made pistol, five cartridges and his share of the extorted money.
