Three of the eight projects being undertaken in Delhi by the Union Urban Development Ministry under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission have been recommended for “withdrawal” owing to slow progress of the projects.
The ministry took the decision following a review of the ongoing projects. All the eight projects are likely to miss the second deadline of March 2014.
The three multi-crore projects that have been withdrawn are the multilevel underground parking at various locations under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, construction of three additional clover leaves at the Noida More Flyover near the Akshardham temple and the remodelling of the Saharnpur Samli Branch Line drains in Shahdara.
A senior Delhi Government official said work related to all the eight projects had been delayed because of logistical reasons, including allocation of monies, land acquisition and clearances.
While the projects have already been deemed slow-moving and delayed, the official said efforts were on to ensure that the pace of the work picks up.
Regarding the Rs. 8,818.00 crore Noida More Flyover project, only one package of the three clover leaves has been completed at a cost of Rs. 12.74 crore. The remaining packages, including slip road, bridges, footpath etc. were dropped by the UTTIPEC.
For the construction of two 20 MGD sewage treatment plants at Nilothi and Pappankalan, only three of the five work packages have been awarded so far.
The Rs. 9,716 crore Delhi Traffic Management plan for areas around Civic Centre JLN Marg, Minto Road has been revised.
The other projects that are lagging behind and will not meet the Ministry’s new deadline of March 2014 are multilevel underground parkings in Shalimar Bagh, Shiv Market Pitampura, QU Pitampura, Central Market Ashok Vihar, Mohammadpur Village, Malviya Nagar Market, PVR Basant Lok, PVR Saket, G-8 Rajouri Garden, Block-10 Subhash Nagar, C-4 Janakpuri, Ajmal Khan Park Karol Bagh, Krishna Market Kalkaji, Hauzrani, New Friends Colony and Jangpura Bhogal.
The Rs. 5,120 crore project for covering the drain in Nauroji Nagar from Africa Avenue to Ring Road to construct roads and a parking is also delayed. Work for this project is yet to be awarded and the tender is being refloated.
The only project that is expected to meet the 2014 deadline is the Delhi Jal Board’s ambitious Interceptor Sewers laying project, which is aimed at curbing pollution in the Yamuna river.
The project entails laying of interceptor sewers along the three major drains -- Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara – to check pollution in the river.
The Rs. 1357.71 crore project is being carried out by Engineers India Limited. Though the project is only 50 per cent complete yet, officials are confident that it will meet the 2014 cut off date.
