Thief nabbed

The Delhi Metro Police have arrested a man accused of stealing mobile phones at Central Secretariat metro station. According to the police, a dozen cases of thefts in nearby metro stations have been solved with this arrest.

Mohammad Umar was caught red-handed inside a moving train near Patel Chowk metro station on July 21 while trying to steal a man’s phone from his pocket.

The matter was immediately reported by the victim at Central Secretariat station, followed by registration of an FIR and Umar’s arrest.

Seven FIRs

Umar purportedly told the police that four FIRs under provisions pertaining to theft had been filed against him at Central Secretariat metro police station and three at Kashmere Gate metro police station .

According to Deputy Commissioner Police (Metro) Jitendra Mani: “He is an accused in 12 cases. He mostly committed thefts at crowded areas around Kashmere Gate and other stations.”

A raid was conducted at his residence and four more mobile phones were recovered. “He used to sell the mobile phones he pick-pocketed to unknown people at railway stations and ISBT claiming he was in desperate need of money,” said Mr. Mani.
