For an hour on Saturday night, Delhites joined the world in observing the “Earth Hour” by switching off all electrical appliances and lights to show their concern for the environment.
Power demand in BSES areas reduced by 175 MW on account of the “Earth Hour”. Last year, it had reduced by 169 MW and the city saved 250 MW.
The city’s power companies — BRPL and BYPL — have sent Earth Hour messages in their newsletters to over 34 lakhs customers, said a press note.
The “Earth Hour” is an annual event observed in over 130 countries. Created by the WWF, the event urges households and businesses to turn off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for an hour at the appointed time to raise awareness about climate change.
