: The biennial Thakurani Jatra festival of Berhampur started late night on Saturday with goddess Budhi Thakurani, the reigning deity of the city, reaching her temporary abode at Desibehera street.

The procession from the temple of the deity for her temporary abode began after midnight on Saturday. The deity reached the temporary abode at wee hours.

A flower, considered a representative of the deity, was taken in ghatam in a procession to the temporary abode in a decorated procession.

The whole city especially the old town area is getting into the carnival spirit for this festival. Large number of devotees of all ages have started taking up the garb of mythological characters like Srikrishna, Arjun, Balaram, Parsuram, Radha and Hanuman.

The goddess is considered to be a family member of Desibehera, the leader of the Dera community, the weaver clan that has made Berhampur famous as the silk city.
