A 19-year-old man suffered burn injuries after having inflammable liquid thrown at him near Rohini in north Delhi. The victim, Dilip, was allegedly attacked for confronting three bikers after they allegedly taunted his woman friend.
According to sources in the police, however, other angles leading up to the incident are also being probed, including an examination of whether the man was attacked with the flammable liquid by his associates, in addition to the seeming possibility that he poured it on himself.
On a morning walk
Rishi Pal, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini district), said that the victim was a resident of Nangloi and was out for a morning walk with his female friend near the Srikrishna Gaushala on Kanjhawala Road in Bawana when three men came on a motorcycle and started taunting the girl.
“Dilip objected to this, after which the bikers threw some unknown inflammable liquid at him and set him on fire,” Mr. Pal added.
The incident was relayed to the police from the GB Pant Hospital at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
The victim’s statement has been taken.
The police said that during the probe it was learnt that the couple’s families knew of the relationship.
“Around 50 love letters were recovered from the bags of the couple... many of them were written with blood and addressed to each other and had mentioned about glorification of some act he wanted to do for her to prove his true love for her,” the DCP added.
Mr. Pal said there were some variations in the statement of the couple about the sequence of events leading up to the incident and further investigation was on.
