A 17-year-old was allegedly stabbed to death aboard a moving Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) cluster bus in south-east Delhi’s New Friends Colony (NFC) on Thursday evening as his co-passengers watched helplessly, according to the victim’s family. Four juveniles have been detained.
The police said that Mohammad Anas was returning home after meeting his father when a gang of boys wearing school uniforms snatched his mobile phone and then stabbed him in the neck. Mr. Anas was studying B.Com at the Al Falah University in Faridabad and was a resident of Jamia Nagar.
“He was a first-year student and had to take the last exam of his first semester on Friday,” said the victim’s uncle.
In a statement issued late on Friday, the police claimed to have solved the crime with the detention of four of the five juveniles. All of the accused, according to the police, are government school students.
The snatched mobile phone has also been recovered.
A senior police officer said the incident occurred between Ashram and Sukhdev Vihar depot on Mathura Road around 3.40 p.m. The bus was packed with passengers.
Quoting the bus conductor, who witnessed the incident, the police said a few school children had boarded the vehicle from Ashram.
Soon after, according to the conductor, Anas began yelling that the boys return his mobile phone. An altercation followed during which Mr. Anas was stabbed in the neck. The boys then jumped off the bus.
The conductor, who attributed the gang’s exit to the slow movement of the bus due to traffic congestion, made a call to the police control room. Mr. Anas was taken to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS where he was declared brought dead.
