A Delhi court on Thursday directed the Tihar Jail authorities to take appropriate measures to ensure safety of inmates inside the high-risk ward of the jail.

District Judge Poonam Bamba passed the direction while disposing of a common application by three of the victims, Suhail Ahmed, Mohd Obaidullah Khan and Imran, who are lodged in the ward.

The application, filed by advocate M. S. Khan on their behalf, alleged that 26 inmates sustained injuries in a beating incident by the jail staff without provocation on Tuesday night. Also, these inmates were not provided medical treatment after the beating, the application added.

‘Stock reply’

“Violence against inmates in jail by the jail staff is on the rise and everyday inmates are complaining about it. Whenever such incidents happen, jail authorities come up with the plea that CCTVs were not working, and this has become their stock reply,” the application said.

Earlier too, several inmates of the ward had lodged complaints alleging that they were thrashed inside the ward.

The Delhi High Court had in September directed the jail authorities to conduct a probe and get 47 inmates, who had alleged that they were mercilessly beaten up by the security personnel inside the prison, medically examined.

Samiun Rahman, a British national of Bangladeshi origin, had earlier this month alleged in his complaint that on November 2, Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) personnel came to search his cell and around five TSP personnel searched his body and touched him “very inappropriately”.

The inmate further alleged that he faced such harassment because he is a British national and urged the court to look into the matter and order the area Station House Officer to lodge an FIR against the five ‘culprits’.

The Special Cell of the Delhi Police had arrested Mr. Rahman in September for his alleged involvement in recruiting Rohingya Muslims for al-Qaeda and training them to fight against the Myanmar army.

He had also planned to set up bases in Mizoram or Manipur to train radicalised youths, the investigating agency said.

The jail authorities had in their reply rebutted his charges.
