Summer camps at over 1,000 Delhi government schools began on Thursday with students participating in sports, art, music and other activities.
551 schools last year
Introduced in 2016, the summer camps will cover all 1,024 Delhi government schools, the government said in a statement. Last year, the summer camps were organised in just 551 schools.
The camps will be held inside the school premises in the first half of all weekdays till June 3.
According to the Education Department, the aim is to bridge the learning gap for students who join government schools after Class V. Most government schools cater to students in Class VI and above, while municipal corporations’ schools take children from Classes I to V.
The programme includes games and other activities, which double up as learning, to ensure no student lags behind.
Helping students cope
In a statement, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia said that summer camps were introduced in 2016 to help students joining government schools to “cope with the new academic rigour and the environment”.
“However, they also fit into our vision of schools as institutions beyond mere places of study. Kuch masti, kuch padhai is the concept behind these camps. I am happy that all our schools have taken it upon themselves to make the camps more successful than last year,” said Mr. Sisodia.
Last year, the summer camps were open to about 44,000 students. Apart from inviting parents on certain days, the camps focused on the themes of food, water and waste. The activities were designed to teach students using fun learning techniques.
