Members of Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) and Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Monday participated in a protest against the increasing incidents of cow vigilantism and attacks on minority communities across India.

The members demonstrated outside the Delhi Police headquarters.

‘Alarming situation’

“There has been growing incidents of mob lynchings across the country. The recent attacks on six Muslim men in Haridas Nagar for allegedly carrying buffalo calves for slaughter, or the beating up of a a metro construction worker in Sarai Kale Khan for his religious identity is alarming,” said Shahnawaz Jaman, Delhi State Committee member of KYS.

“The Ballabgarh incident and those in Haryana and Jharkhand are other examples. Such incident have erupted in recent times, especially with the BJP coming to power,” he added

‘Diverting attention’

In a memorandum submitted to the Delhi Police, JNUSU demanded immediate arrest of the accused in the incidents. They also demanded more patrolling in border areas for protection of those legally transporting animals.

A statement issued by the KYS accused the BJP-government of instigating such acts in order to divert attention from the crises that the country is reeling under.

“Instead of curbing such incidents, the RSS-BJP government is fuelling protracted riots to intensify polarisation of communities. The country is reeling under an economic crisis and farmers are protesting, but the government is diverting attention by patronising a communal atmosphere” read the statement.

Accusing the present regime of not taking measures to curb such incidents, Mr. Jaman said: “The attacks are taking place not only on Muslims but on other minority communities such as the Dalits. The graveness of the situation can be judged by the fact that these incidents are happening in the national capital itself. It simply reflects the ideology of the BJP government. Through such attacks the government is simply trying to establish its power over the people.”
