Students from North-East allege assault by Delhi cops

The two SIs -- Laxmichand and Puneet -- have been placed under suspension

Two students from the North-East India on Wednesday accused a couple of Delhi police sub-inspectors of brutally assaulting and passing racist remarks at them at the Bharat Nagar police station here.

The policemen have been suspended.

According to a statement issued by the North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS), two of its members had got down from a DTC bus and were speaking to a ticket checker when the two SIs intervened and started intimidating them.

“They resisted the policemen’s intimidating tactics and argued back. At this, the two sub-inspectors took them to the police station where they not only thrashed the unsuspecting students but also passed several racist comments on their physical features.

Shockingly, the two students were only released once the policemen had forcefully made them sign on a statement saying that they were not assaulted by the Police but by another party,” said the statement.

A senior police officer said that the medico-legal examination of one of the students confirmed bruises and acting on the complaint made by the students, the two SIs -- Laxmichand and Puneet -- have been placed under suspension.
