‘Strengthen municipal corporations’

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A BJP office-bearer in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Friday demanded that the State Government strengthen civil bodies by divesting certain powers.

SDMC Standing Committee chairperson Subhash Arya said the Congress government in Delhi had taken over services, including maintenance of roads more than 60-feet wide, Rural Department and water utility, in its 15-year rule.

“The new government will have to strengthen local governance and give us the work as per the 74{+t}{+h}Constitutional Amendment,” said Mr. Arya.

He added that the division of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2012 had further weakened the civic bodies. He asked the Aam Aadmi Party Government to pass a resolution to transfer all services to the corporations, along with monetary grants for the same. Mr. Arya also said that unification of the corporations would improve services.
