A stolen phone was traced by the Delhi Police minutes after the theft was committed in Vasundhara Enclave on Monday, the police said on Tuesday. Technology and quick thinking by the phone owner helped the police arrest the accused from east Delhi’s Trilokpuri.

The police said they received a PCR call on Monday at 9.10 p.m. about a mobile phone robbery near Dharamshila Hospital in Vasundhara Enclave.

Phone tracking app

Victim Tarun Kumar, who works with a Noida-based software company, told the police that he was on the way to office with his friend Devansh when the incident happened. Mr. Kumar was riding pillion on a two-wheeler and navigating the route on his mobile phone when two bike-borne assailants blocked their way.

“The man ridding pillion on the motorcycle pulled out a pistol and pointed it at me. He snatched my phone and fled,” said Mr. Kumar. He added that they started chasing the robbers and simultaneously called a friend in office from Mr. Devansh’s phone. He asked his friend in office to use the ‘find my device’ feature of the stolen phone to update him on its current location, which was accessed through his registered email ID.

“With the help of the mobile tracker application, we traced the phone near Shiv Mandir in Trilokpuri. Since the robbers were armed, we called the police for help,” said Mr. Kumar.

Shots fired

Responding to the call, a police team reached the spot and began a search. After few minutes, the victim spotted the robbers on the same motorcycle near MCD School in Trilokpuri. “We asked the suspects to surrender but one of them pulled out a pistol and aimed at the policemen before we fired shots in the air. The robbers were overpowered and arrested,” said a senior police official.

The accused have been identified as Imran and Bilal, both residents of Trilokpuri. The phone was recovered around 10:30 p.m, just over an hour after it was stolen.

“We have recovered three mobile phones, a stolen motorcycle and seized a country-made gun with live rounds in it from their possession. It seems they robbed two more people apart from the complainant. The case is under investigation,” said a senior police officer. A case under IPC sections of robbery and Arms Act has been registered at Mayur Vihar police station.
