A 20-year-old daughter of a journalist working with a national daily has committed suicide as she was stalked by her neighbour in East Delhi. She also left a video message in her mobile phone accusing her neighbour’s sons and daughters of forcing her to take the extreme step.

After examining the video, the police have registered a case of abetment to suicide. However, no arrests have been made so far.

A suicide note was also found near her body which read: “Mummy, papa, please forgive me. The reason for my extreme step is recorded in my mobile phone.”

The incident took place in Krishna Nagar late on Tuesday night.

According to police, Divya (name changed) was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room.

Her father discovered her body and called in the police around 12-30 a.m. A Police Control Room van that reached the spot took the victim to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Divya was constantly being harassed and stalked by her neighbour’s sons who had also attacked her on a previous occasion.

An FIR was also registered in this regard at the Krishna Nagar police station and the accused were arrested. However, they were left off on bail eight days later.

Talking to The Hindu , Divya's father said: “My neighbour’s sons and daughter had thrashed my daughter last year in August. They pulled her out of the house, dragged her by her hair and beat her. They did this because she reacted to their constant stalking and harassment. A case under sections of molestation, causing hurt and house trespass was registered against the accused and their family at the Krishna Nagar police station. They were sent to jail but were let off on bail later.”

“After filing the case, I thought my daughter will not be harassed, but I was wrong. In fact, their behaviour became even worse after they came out of jail,” he added.

According to Divya’s father, he had complained to the local police about this issue several times but they did not take any action. Divya was pursuing commerce through correspondence from Delhi University and was preparing for chartered accountancy along with it.
