Two persons died and the health of two others deteriorated after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Pilakhuwa area in Hapur on Holi. The deceased persons — identified as Anand (40) and Rampal (50) were cremated by their family members before the police arrived.

Two other persons whose health deteriorated were identified as Kunwarpal and Vinod Kumar.

No complaint

Pilakhuwa police station incharge Ajay Kumar said that the police found out about the incident through local sources as nobody registered a complaint.

“After suspecting a spurious liquor case, a police team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Before the police reached, the deceased were cremated by their family members,”

“Some villagers told us the deceased Anand has a history of diseases like TB. Others told us that they consumed liquor at various places on Holi. We are probing the case from all angles,” Mr Kumar added.

‘Not sure of cause’

He said that the police found out later about the persons whose health had deteriorated. “They were recuperating at a private hospital in the area. They told us that they had consumed liquor at various places on Holi. By evening their health deteriorated and they complained of vomiting. Their condition is reportedly stable,” Mr Kumar further said.

The police officers said that it is yet to ascertain either it is a case of spurious liquor or not.

“We have intensified checking in the area. We have also alerted local intelligence. As of now it is premature to say whether it is a case of spurious liquor or not. We are probing the case from all angles,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Atul Yadav.

Sense of caution

The incident has triggered a sense of caution in the area.

“There are different stories floating in and around the village. We suspect they died after consuming spurious liquor. We are also asking friends and relatives to avoid liquor, till the picture is clear,” said Charanjeet, a resident of Pilakhuwa.
