A biker and a pillion rider were critically injured when a speeding SUV with a red beacon allegedly driven by the son of political activist Mohammed Shakil Saifi hit their motorcycle in West Delhi’s Nihal Vihar on Wednesday.
It is alleged that accused Mohammed Faiz Saifi was in an inebriated condition when the accident took place. Faiz, along with the passenger in the car, Amit, has been arrested. The two were beaten up by an angry crowd at the spot.
Faiz’s father is a close aide of Delhi PWD Minister Rajkumar Chauhan, said the police.
According to the police, around 9-30 p.m. when Faiz was on his way home, his over-speeding vehicle first rammed a kiosk and then the two-wheeler before hitting an electric pole and coming to a halt.
Local residents said the two men on the motor-cycle, later identified as 40-year-old Krishan Kumar Pandey and Shiv Kumar, got dragged to some distance on the road after being hit by the SUV.
A police officer said that following the accident, several local residents caught hold of the accused and thrashed them.
Later the police were called who took the injured to nearby Sanjay Gandhi hospital from where Shiv was referred to Safdarjung Hospital.
Faiz and Amit too were hospitalised but the latter was discharged soon after.
The officer said that Faiz and Amit have been arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. Another FIR has also been registered against those who thrashed the accused after the accident. Since the accused had put a red beacon on a private vehicle illegally, provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act have also been slapped.
A senior police officer said that some empty bottles of beer were also recovered from the vehicle. Blood samples of Faiz and Amit have been sent for examination. The vehicle is registered in the name of one Rajiv.
