An auto-rickshaw driver was killed on Nelson Mandela Road here in the early hours of Sunday when a speeding Mercedes car hit him from behind.
The accident took place while Head Constable Kailash Chand, who is presently posted in Vasant Kunj (North) police station, was chasing the Mercedes for rash driving.
Kailash was patrolling in the area on his motorcycle around 2-30 a.m. when a Mercedes car allegedly being rashly driven overtook him at a high speed. At this, the policeman started following the car on his motorcycle. Even before the policeman could flag down the car, it rammed an auto-rickshaw from behind in front of a shopping mall on Nelson Mandela Road.The auto was badly damaged due to the impact of the accident and the car also came to a halt.
The policeman immediately detained the car driver, who was identified as Harshneet S. Marwah, a resident of Green Park Extension. One of his friends,
Prayag Raj, was travelling on the passenger seat and another, Daman Jeet, was on the rear seat. The police have mentioned in the FIR that liquor smell was emanating from the mouths of all the three youths.
The policeman flagged down a Quick Reaction Team vehicle coming from the direction of the local police station and the auto-rickshaw driver was shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre in the vehicle. The driver, later identified as Lalit Kumar Jha, was declared brought dead at the hospital.
A case has been registered under Section 279 (rash driving) and 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 185 (driving by a drunken person) of the Motors Vehicle Act at the Vasant Kunj (North) police station.
