Solar panels on DJB buildings

June 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Water treatment plants, reservoirs, land and buildings of the Delhi Jal Board will be used to generate solar power in order to help the water utility cut down its power bill.

The roofs of water treatment plants, the tops of underground tanks and surface area of buildings will have solar panels, which will produce a total of 30 megawatts (MW) of power.

“This is to reduce our dependence on discoms and help us tide over during the peak summer months. It will also help save Rs.500 crore a year on electricity bills, not to mention it will be clean energy,” said DJB CEO S.S. Yadav.

The DJB will float a tender regarding this by the end of the month.

Renewable energy companies registered with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will be eligible to apply. The project will not cost the DJB anything.

The water utility had recently commissioned a 50 KW plant at its headquarters that generates 6,600 units.

The plant, set up at a cost of Rs.53. 55 lakh, is saving the DJB nearly Rs.55,000 a month.

The move will help the DJB save nearly Rs.500 crore yearly
