Six separate arrests for drug trafficking

April 21, 2012 09:55 am | Updated 09:55 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Six persons, including a foreign national, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking in the Capital. The police claim to have seized consignments of cocaine, heroin and marijuana from the accused.

The Crime Branch received a tip-off that a person would come to Delhi on board a flight from Mumbai on Thursday to supply cocaine to his clients.

Accordingly, a trap was laid and the suspect was arrested near the airport. He was identified as Uche Sylvester, 35, a Nigerian national. “We seized 100 gm of cocaine from him,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ashok Chand.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he first came to India on a tourist visa in January last year. He initially went to Mumbai from where he started exporting electronic goods to his country, as his wife runs a shop there. In due course, the accused came in contact with a fellow Nigerian and drug peddler Chris, who roped him into the business.

In another case, three alleged members of a drug syndicate have been arrested by the Special Cell. A consignment of 2.5 kg of heroin worth Rs.3 crore in the international market was purportedly seized from them.

The police received a tip-off about two persons supplying heroin in the Capital. Subsequently a team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Subhash Tandon laid a trap and arrested them at Gokalpuri on Wednesday after 490 gm of heroin was found in their possession. They were identified as Mohammad Salim and Mohammad Jameel. The police seized 410 gm of heroin from Salim's rented accommodation.

During interrogation, Salim purportedly disclosed that he worked for a drug dealer named Mohammad Hussain alias Lalu Langra, a resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. At his instance, the police conducted raids in Kanpur and arrested the main accused. The three were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Investigations revealed that Hussain, who belongs to Bihar, used to supply heroin to his clients in the Capital. “We seized 1.6 kg of heroin from Jameel's residence on Thursday,” said a police officer. Accused Hussain was previously involved in several criminal cases, including two related to drug trafficking. He was arrested by the Narcotics Branch of Delhi Police in 2005 and 2007, and was convicted in both the cases. After being released from jail, he had shifted base to Kanpur to evade detection.

“He procures opium from Jharkhand and prepares crude heroine in his village at Saharsa in Bihar,” said the officer, adding that Salim too was arrested by the Narcotics Branch in 2003. He was again arrested in Madhya Pradesh in 2006.

In the third case, the police arrested Dinesh Pal, 28, and Nagender Singh, 35 after 104-kg of marijuana was found in their possession at Sarai Rohilla in North Delhi. The duo were allegedly smuggling the consignment into the Capital in a car. The contraband had been brought from Odisha.
