Six men allegedly involved in over 100 auto-lifting cases have been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. Sixteen stolen cars have allegedly been recovered from them.
Sonu Pathak and Mohammad Akbar were arrested by a police team when they were passing through Delhi Gate allegedly in a stolen car on November 5. Investigations revealed that the car was stolen from Anand Vihar.
During interrogation, the accused purportedly disclosed that their gang comprised over a dozen auto-lifters, receivers and mechanics, who would tamper with the engine and chassis numbers of vehicles. At their instance, the police team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravi Shankar arrested two other accused, Shakir and Hitler, in the Walled City. A drill machine used for opening cars and breaking gear and steering locks was purportedly seized from their car, which was also found stolen.
The next day, the police arrested two others, Mujir and Sangeet, from the same area and purportedly recovered six stolen vehicles.
According to the police, the accused stationed stolen cars in the parking lot of JPN Hospital, Machhi Bazar in the Walled City and along the roads near colleges and cinema halls. They would get orders for stealing cars of a particular, make and colour.
The police said Sangeet is a commerce graduate and had won many championships in judo and karate at the university and State level but entered the world of crime to make quick money. He was arrested in November last year and released in July this year. In jail, he came into contact with Mujir and Shakir who allegedly roped him in.
