Shots fired outside AAP MLA’s office

July 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - New Delhi:

A gang of armed assailants opened fire outside Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Kailash Gahlot’s Najafgarh office late on Thursday, police said.

Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sen Bassi said he had directed the South West District police to “expeditiously” investigate the matter. An FIR has been lodged against unidentified persons.

R.A. Sanjeev, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-west) said the incident occurred around 1 a.m. outside Mr. Gahlot’s office, adjacent to a local school. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act has been registered.

As many as nine shots were fired directly at Mr. Gahlot’s office, seemingly from country-made weapons, police said. Multiple assailants seemed to have been involved in executing the incident, they added.

Mr. Gahlot, however, told the police that he “did not have any enmity with anyone in the area” which, police said, was proving to be an impediment in investigation.

Fortunately, an investigating officer said, Mr. Gahlot was not in his office when the firing took place. According to police, the local control room received word about the incident after a security guard of the school close-by informed the legislator’s aides, who then called the police.

Senior police officials were despatched to the spot as soon as local police was intimated and surveyed the scene of crime along with a crime and forensics team each.
