Two new projects for Gurugram — an automated guideway transit (AGT) System and a new railway terminal equipped with world-class facilities — were announced at separate functions on Tuesday.

A detailed project report will soon be prepared for the AGT system, to be implemented on one of the roads in Gurugram. This was disclosed during a meeting of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar with members of a delegation from Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Smart cities

The possibility of introducing the system in Karnal and Faridabad, which are to be developed as smart cities, is also being explored.

Giving detailed information about the AGT system, members of the delegation said the system had been successfully introduced in several countries and was considered a better option compared to metro rail since the cost of construction and operation was considerably lower. The AGT is a fully-automated, driver-less and grade-separated transit system in which vehicles are automatically guided along a “guideway”.

Haryana Public Works (Buildings and Roads) Minister Rao Narbir Singh; Chief Secretary D.S. Dhesi; Principal Resident Commissioner (Haryana Bhawan) Anand Mohan Sharan; Principal Secretary (Town and Country Planning Department) Arun Kumar Gupta and Gurugram Commissioner D. Suresh were also present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu dedicated the newly-electrified rail section between Rohtak and Jind to the public during a function in Rohtak.

Mounting pressure

He announced that a new terminal equipped with world-class facilities would be established in Gurugram to reduce mounting pressure on the Delhi terminal due to an increase in the number of trains coming to the national Capital from different parts of the country. Work on the project would start soon, he said at function organised by the Northern Railway. The Minister also flagged off new DEMU train between Jind and Sonepat through video-conference.
