Unidentified assailants opened fire outside a court in Rohtak leaving one dead and five injured on Tuesday morning. According to the police, they had come to target alleged gangster Ramesh Lohar, whose appearance was scheduled during the day. The deceased, identified as Sanjit, was one of the co-accused, along with Lohar, in an attempt to murder case.

Accomplices in car

Of the assailants, at least one was dressed as a woman, the police said. Lohar himself is one of the injured while the others include a lawyer. The police said prima facie it was a case of gang rivalry and the prime suspect in the case is one Naresh alias Kala, who hails from the same village as Lohar and efforts are on to trace him, the police added.

The incident took place when Lohar was coming out of the court. Initially, the police said only two assailants on a bike were involved, but some eyewitnesses informed them that there was another car in which a group of their accomplices were present as well. It is, however, not clear if shot had been fired from the car as well.

15 rounds fired

Meanwhile, the two men on the bike fired nearly 15 rounds outside the court complex apparently targeting Lohar, who had come there in connection with an attempt to murder case.

The attack injured six persons, including Lohar and a lawyer.

The attackers drove away after the incident while the victims were taken to PGIMS, Rohtak where Sanjit died during treatment.

Bid to save gangster

Eyewitnesses told the police that Sanjit had taken the bullet in a bid to save Lohar but he also got shot in the foot.

A large contingent of police personnel reached the spot and cordoned off the complex. The police recorded the statement of eyewitnesses.

“A case under relevant provisions of the law has been registered and further investigation is on,” said a statement from Rohtak Police. The police are also looking for CCTV footage.
