Five criminals were arrested from a residential building near Dwarka Mor metro station following an encounter with the police on Tuesday. The police claimed to have seized huge cache of arms and ammunition from the accused.

Following a tip-off, the Punjab Police approached their Delhi counterparts to nab the accused who are wanted in connection with several crimes, including murder, attempt to murder and carjacking.

Accomplice escapes

Deepak, Sumit, Sumit and Kirshan are residents of Haryana, while Tiku lives in New Delhi. One of their accomplice managed to escape, the police said, adding that no one was injured in the encounter.

“Both the Punjab Police and the accused fired nearly 10 rounds each. Five of the six accused were arrested. Eleven illegal arms, one pistol and over 100 cartridges have been recovered,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-west) Shibesh Singh.

The police said the flat was rented by the man who managed to evade arrest.

“I was walking towards the gate when I saw five policemen position themselves. This was followed by gunshots. I ran for my lives and huddled inside a room with a few others. We later saw a curtain hanging from a window of the second-floor flat. We realised that one of the accused had managed to give the police a slip,” said Mukesh, a security guard posted at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation office located adjacent to the building.

Lalit, owner of a tea stall located adjacent to the building, said, “Police teams arrived around 11 a.m. Soon, the entire lane was swarming with policemen.”

However, the family living in the flat opposite to the one rented by the accused their neighbours had never done anything to raise suspicions. “About four to five of them had shifted to the flat nearly two months ago. They were always cordial. It was only after the police arrived that we realised something was amiss,” said a neighbour.
