The Delhi Government is keen to make the Capital a world-class city worthy of being emulated by other ultra-modern developed cities in the world, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Saturday after laying the foundation for the comprehensive development of a 3.80-km corridor between Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk on Outer Ring Road at an estimated cost of Rs.422 crore.
Ms. Dikshit said the Public Works Department, which will execute the project, has been working hard to turn Delhi into a city with a massive infrastructure of roads, flyovers, elevated roads, underpasses and modern foot-over bridges with escalators. The comprehensive development of the corridor includes construction of a 2.60-km elevated road that will take off after Pitampura Power House T-Junction light and end at the road over bridge of Mukarba Chowk.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the Congress Government in Delhi has changed the face of the city through its all round development. “The corridor for which the construction work started today [on Saturday] is part of a well-planned scheme to make entire section from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad signal-free. This involves construction of seven flyovers and elevated roads at an estimated cost of Rs.2,200 crore. The PWD has also been spending Rs.1,500 crore to give a new look to 647 roads transferred to it from the Municipal Corporations of Delhi.”
As for the new project launched on Saturday, Mr. Chauhan said the corridor between Madhuban Chowk and Mukarba Chowk will have a 60-metre right of way with a total length of 3.80 km, including 2.60 km elevated portion. This will ensure signal-free movement of traffic from Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk. Along the way there will be facilities for pedestrians, bus lanes, green belt, footpath, cycle track and rain water harvesting.
On completion of the project, the intersections at the Power House T-Junction, North Pitampura T-junction, Prashant Vihar T-Junction, Shalimar Bagh Crossing near Rohini Jail and Badli T-Junction will become signal-free and this will result in huge savings in travel time and fuel consumption.
Union Minister Kapil Sibal was among those present at the launch of the project.
