With humongous amount of work still remaining to be done for the Commonwealth Games-related projects, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday warned that contractors who do not complete their works by August 31 would be penalised and blacklisted.
Addressing the contractors and consultants at a meeting convened at Delhi Secretariat, the Chief Minister said it was the basic responsibility of the contractors to complete their assigned work relating to the Commonwealth Games within the specified deadlines.
With the Games drawing closer, she exhorted all the contractors and consultants to concentrate on their works and bring any hurdle coming in the way of the projects to the notice of the Delhi Government so that the problem could be resolved immediately.
The Chief Minister said her Cabinet colleagues – who have been handed over different projects to supervise – have been constantly apprising her about the deficiencies observed by them.
Stating that the Government has been monitoring the progress of the works on a daily basis, Ms. Dikshit said the pride and prestige of the city hinged on the works related to the Games-related projects.
Ms. Dikshit said the deadlines for completion of the works will not change now. All the work related to removal of debris has to be completed by August 10 and the work on all the projects would have to be completed by August 31. The month of September, she said, has been earmarked for the final `fine finishing’.
Demanding that the work related to street-lighting, street-scaping, signages and greening should be of high quality, the Chief Minister said work of streetscaping was lagging behind. She said the greening work under the old flyovers has to be completed by August 10 and there was also a need to expedite the landscaping and beautification beneath the new flyovers.
Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said the time has come to work ``tirelessly, unitedly and in a coordinated manner’’. He informed that inter-departmental coordination has been improved to overcome any delays.
Since there was a complaint of shortage of labour from some contractors, Principal Secretary (PWD) K.K. Sharma said the contractors can approach PWD for allocation of more labour force.
It was also stated in the meeting that the exercise of marking lanes over a distance of 106 km now has to be completed within 15 days. Another meeting of the Government with the contractors has now been scheduled for August 10.
