Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday expressed shock, anguish and pain at the rape of a minor girl in a school run by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Describing it as “inhuman and shameful”, she said the Corporations must strengthen their existing security infrastructure.

She said Education and Woman & Child Development Minister Kiran Walia has taken up the matter with the North Delhi Mayor. The Delhi Chief Secretary has also been directed to contact the authorities concerned in the Corporation.

“Prima facie it appears that lack of security and supervision by NDMC might be the cause of the incident,” a statement by her office said.

The Delhi Government has also directed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to urgently take stock of security situation in its primary schools in order to ensure a sense of confidence and security in the parents.

Prof. Walia also expressed her deep concern at the sexual assault on the six-year-old school girl in the premises of the municipal school in Mangolpuri.

She spoke to the Mayor and demanded stringent action against officials whose negligence led to the incident in the school premises.

Prof. Walia said she has also asked the Delhi Police to take strictest action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and provide counselling to the child.
