Stating that courtesy and civic manner would be much required during the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday exhorted teachers to instil good habits and civic sense in the students.
Speaking at the State Teachers’ Award Ceremony where she presented State Awards for the year 2008-09 to 70 outstanding Delhi teachers of Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said the role of teachers in bringing awareness in the country has always been important. Teachers had inspired the youth during the freedom struggle. And now when the city is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games, she said a sense of discipline and dedication in students is required.
“I believe only students can display this sense of discipline. A large number of students and NCC cadets would be deployed during Commonwealth Games. Success of the Games would depend on the efforts of the Education Department, which is definitely going to get credit for this,’’ Ms. Dikshit said.
The Chief Minister Smt. Dikshit also congratulated the teachers who were honoured at the function. “I see an inspiration in teachers which they have imbibed from Dr. S. Radhakrishna, whose views, philosophy and thoughts are not only relevant today but would continue to guide teaching community for ever”.
She further stated that the teachers with their outstanding contribution, labour and sincerity have brought a sea-change in the level of education in Delhi, which has become a role model for other States.
Lauding the role of the Education Department in improving the education scenario, the Chief Minister said a number of unique schemes like BALA, Rupantar and YUVA have worked towards the overall development of the students. As a result, she said, the Board results in Delhi have gone up from 32 per cent to 86 per cent.
While noting that there was still scope for further improvement, the Chief Minister reminded the audience that scoring marks was not the only criteria of development and intelligence. There are other scales too which count during evaluation of personality. “The Government is committed to provide an infrastructure right from primary education to senior secondary level so that a dependable and strong foundation of development could be made available for students,’’ she said.
Earlier, Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely mentioned how school education in Delhi has become a role model that is being emulated by the other States. He said it is due to the dedicated teachers and officers that the silent revolution has been rung in.
Industries Minister Haroon Yusuf in his address appreciated the guidance provided by the Chief Minister and the functioning of Education Minister for the success achieved in the education sector.
