The Delhi Police on Sunday approached Facebook’s India office seeking details of the account holder who sent vulgar messages to Congress spokesperson and President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee.
Screenshots The offender’s identity and screenshots of the messages he sent were shared by Ms. Mukherjee on her Facebook wall on Saturday.
The Cyber Cell had registered a case under Sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and 67 of Information Technology Act against one Partha Mandal, based on Ms. Mukherjee’s complaint,.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber) Anyesh Roy said they had started a probe.
The police said a team had been formed to crack the IP address of the account from where the messages were sent.
“We first want to confirm that the individual behind this is the same man whose image and profile appeared with the messages and not someone using his identity,” said another officer.
“President’s daughter” “He [Mandal] sent me the vulgar messages through Facebook messenger last night [Friday]. My first reaction was to block him, but I saved the screenshots as I did not want him to get away. If he did not think twice before abusing the President’s daughter, would he care about other victims? My silence would encourage him to find more victims,” Ms. Mukherjee had said earlier.
